It is said that the weather in Regensburg is often quite bad, changeable and one does not know what to expect, but even when it is gloomy Regensburg is able to warm the hearts of its visitors with its charming urban atmosphere. Regensburg’s Old Town is filled with old buildings and bridges, and most of the building’s facades glow in warm colours. The rather well-preserved medieval centre of Regensburg is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Regensburg is another beautiful city, which is located on the Danube. Regensburg is especially important as the largest German port located on the Danube. This southeastern German city is the starting station of the Rhine-Main-Danube canal.
The Latin name of Regensburg is Castra Regina, which means Fortress of the River Regen. In Roman times, the Limes castle of Castra Regina was built here. It is believed that around 179, during the reign of Marcus Aurelius, the first settlement was formed on the site of today’s Regensburg. It was an important centre at the beginning of the Danube, and today its place is taken by the Old Town of Regensburg.
Due to its magnificent architectural monuments, concentrated mostly in the Old Town, Regensburg is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. Most of the buildings have sealed the architectural styles since the 17th-18th centuries. Most of the historic buildings in Regensburg are located around Bismarck and Hyde Squares. Here you can see the Old Town Hall, the majestic Petersdom Cathedral, the Stone Bridge, the Roman Wall, the noble houses in the Italian style – the Golden Tower and the Baumburg Tower.
